HIPAA, Security and Medisoft
Most offices are familiar with the HIPAA Privacy form that their patients sign. But, they are not familiar with what it means. Basically, it tells the patient their data is NOT private and can be given out freely for purposes of treatment, payment and operations (TPO). However, the patient has the right to request a copy of everyone who has seen their protected health information (PHI). Here is where many clinics run into a problem. If a patient requested this of your organization, could you do it? How in Medisoft would you know which staff members have and have not viewed patient information? Well, this is a very simple process to setup. First, you go to "File" on the main menu and "Security Setup" on the drop down and click "New"; then follow the prompts. Remember, if you get stuck in Medisoft, just hit the F1 key and it will bring you help in the area you are in. Once you have security setup, going forward; you can run an audit report of the patient data.
